Vienna Battles Deep Freeze as Danube Ice Threatens Shipping

Vienna battles deep freeze as Danube ice threatens shipping | AfricanewsAs the mercury plummeted to minus six degrees Celsius, Vienna found itself in the grip of a deep freeze. The city's residents were not alone in their struggles, however, as the Danube River also felt the chill, threatening shipping and commerce.

City Services Scramble to Keep Up with the Cold
In an effort to mitigate the effects of the cold snap, city services in Vienna lifted a partial ban on salt spreading until noon. This move was prompted by forecasts warning of a particularly rough stretch of weather, which hospitals quickly felt the impact of. Between midnight and midday, Vienna Rescue treated 65 people for slips on ice, with injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones.

Danube Ice Breaker Returns to Service
The cold snap also had a significant impact on the Danube River, where ice was breaking in Vienna harbour. This was done to protect wintering cruise ships and keep routes open for shipping. The MS Eisvogel, an ageing icebreaker that has been rarely used in recent mild winters, returned to service with temperatures near minus six degrees Celsius.

As the city of Vienna battles through the deep freeze, it is clear that the effects of climate change are being felt far beyond the city's borders. The Danube River, a vital artery for shipping and commerce, has been threatened by the ice, highlighting the need for urgent action to address the impacts of global warming.
