Target's New CEO Begins Tenure with Layoffs and Leadership Shakeup Amid DEI Rollback Backlash

Target’s new CEO begins tenure with layoffs and leadership shakeup amid continued DEI rollback backlashIn a move that has sent shockwaves through the retail industry, Target's new CEO, Michael Fiddelke, has kicked off his tenure with a series of major shakeups, including layoffs and a leadership overhaul. As the company continues to navigate the aftermath of its decision to scale back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Fiddelke is vowing to drive growth and revitalize the struggling retailer.

Layoffs and Leadership Changes
In a press release issued on Tuesday, February 10, Target announced plans to cut 500 jobs as part of its efforts to rebuild its customer base. The layoffs will affect approximately 400 positions across the company's supply chain operations and about 100 roles at the store district level. Meanwhile, several top executives are leaving their posts, including Rick Gomez, chief commercial officer with 23 years at the company, who is departing after a long tenure. Jill Sando, a 29-year company veteran who served as chief merchandising officer for apparel, accessories, and home, will retire.

New Leadership Team
As part of its efforts to revamp its leadership team, Target has announced several key appointments. Lisa Roath, who previously oversaw food, essentials, and beauty, will step into Fiddelke's former role as chief operating officer. Cara Sylvester, formerly chief guest experience officer, will become the company's chief merchandising officer. These changes are aimed at aligning the right talent and expertise with key roles and simplifying the company's structure to drive growth and innovation.

Background on Target's DEI Rollback
Target's decision to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives has sparked widespread backlash and a boycott from customers. The move was seen as a response to the Trump administration's broader attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in 2025. Fiddelke acknowledged the weight of this moment when he took over as CEO, calling it 'humbling and deeply personal' after more than two decades with the company.

Fiddelke's Vision for Target
In his initial address to employees, Fiddelke outlined a multipronged strategy to revive the struggling retailer. This includes strengthening merchandising authority, elevating the guest experience, accelerating technology, and investing in teams and communities. He emphasized the importance of listening closely, moving with clarity and urgency, and leading with purpose to drive growth and innovation.

As Target navigates this critical period, it remains to be seen whether Fiddelke's leadership will be able to turn the company around. With a renewed focus on driving growth and innovation, Target is poised to make significant changes in the coming weeks and months. One thing is clear: the retail landscape has never been more competitive, and only time will tell if Target can emerge as a leader once again.
