Breaking Down Barriers: Bay Area Founder Launches 24/7 Caregiver Support Line
In a groundbreaking move, Nikki K. Lopez, a Jamaican-born certified dementia practitioner and life coach, has launched a 24/7 caregiver support line to address the staggering care gap in Black families. This innovative initiative is part of her mission to provide comprehensive wraparound support services to family caregivers nationwide. The Alarming Reality
According to research, 57% of Black family caregivers experience high-burden caregiving, providing an average of thirty hours of care per week. Moreover, over a quarter report having no support system in place, leaving them solely responsible for all caregiving duties. The financial burden is also significant, with Black families spending 34% of their annual income on care-related costs, compared to 14% for white families.
A Personal Journey
Lopez's own experience as a caregiver has shaped her approach to this critical issue. She left a career at the Federal Reserve Bank to care for her grandmother, who is still living at 99 years old. This journey led Lopez to found two organizations: Caregiver OneCall and Caring Haven. Her book, 'When the Strong Get Tired,' serves as both a companion and a call to action for caregivers who need permission to receive support.
Caregiver OneCall: A Beacon of Hope
This 501(c)(3) nonprofit provides free, around-the-clock caregiver navigation and support services nationwide. Whether families are navigating a new diagnosis, managing medication questions, or dealing with burnout, Caregiver OneCall is there to offer guidance and resources. The service is funded entirely through donations and grants, ensuring that families pay nothing for access.
Caring Haven: A Model of Excellence
In the San Francisco Bay Area, Caring Haven provides award-winning in-home senior care services grounded in dignity, cultural competence, and clinical expertise. Lopez's background as a certified dementia practitioner shapes every aspect of the agency's approach, from caregiver training to family communication to care planning.
A Call to Action
Lopez is building the Caregiver Champion monthly giving program, inviting individuals, faith communities, employers, and organizations to contribute as little as a few dollars a month. This initiative aims to keep the support line available to families who need it most.
Nikki K. Lopez's groundbreaking work is a testament to her dedication to addressing the care gap in Black families. By providing comprehensive wraparound support services, she is breaking down barriers and offering hope to those who need it most. As we move forward, let us recognize the importance of supporting our caregivers and working together to create a more inclusive and compassionate society.
