St. Elmo Brady, born in Louisville, Kentucky, was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States. He received his doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1916. Brady's research focused on the acidity of carboxylic acids and he later taught and held leadership positions at historically black universities, including Tuskegee University, Howard University, and Fisk University. #blaqhistory
